The
South Florida Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Transplant
Institute is a 4,000 sq. ft. facility located in Bethesda
Health City, Boynton Beach, Florida.
BMSCTI - Entrance "C"
Outpatient
Services
To
date, there are only a handful of completely outpatient bone
marrow/stem cell transplant (BM/SCT) programs in the country.
Most programs combine inpatient and outpatient care.
There are distinct advantages, however, to a totally outpatient
approach. The greatest being the reduced risk of nosocomial
infections. There has been a 36 percent increase in the rate of
hospital-acquired infections over the past 20 years according to the Center
for Disease Control.
Almost two million
patients have developed nosocomial infections each year, of which
90,000 result in death. In addition, patients who receive a
totally outpatient BM/SCT return home following treatments and remain
with family and loved ones. This can be especially comforting
because "you don't feel sick when you're at home [as you would in
the hospital]. By avoiding hospitalization, patients are also
able to return to work or to resume normal daily activities sooner.
Another reason to favor
an outpatient program is improved outcomes. According to Dr.
Maharaj, "Our outpatient approach is proactive rather than
reactive". Through close monitoring, complications can be
identified early and either prevented or treated immediately to reduce
the likelihood of admission to the hospital. Reducing or
eliminating hospital admissions results in significant cost savings to
payors, patients and employers.
This is one of the six treatment rooms in our facility.
Each room has a private bathroom; cable TV/VCR;
artwork to suit the patient's preferences; private
telephone; subdued incandescent lighting and modern
medical equipment. A pharmacy dedicated to the Institute
is located within the facility.
Health City’s
location is convenient for Palm Beach County residents and central to
an area of high residential and commercial growth. Special lodging
arrangements are available for transplant patients from outside Palm
Beach County.
